So our first away fixture in the SAL took us to Old Finchelians where on a lovely sunny day we was met with probably the best grass surface we’ve ever played on, it was just like playing on the 3G. Credit to the groundsman.
On to the changing room and after cramming 15 people into 7ft x 7ft ‘cupboard’ and shutting the door, we then realised when it came to leaving that the handle was broke and we had to endure 15 mins of Sonny Baldwin pleading his case to play upfront, this type of torture should be reserved for SAS Who dares wins! Finally someone arrived with a screwdriver and table knife to rescue us!!
On to the game, credit to OF they tried to play out from the back but our midfield 3 of Corroyer, Foster and Kelner were constantly turning over possession and our clinical finishing was the difference between the teams.
That’s how the first goal came about, quick transition found Diebelius in space and his cross found Thake who laid it off to Corroyer to hit a 20 yard screamer into the top corner.
Minutes later it was 2-0, again Diebelius found space and his crossshot found Thake at the far post to finish from an acute angle.
Diebelius then capped a fine first half personal display by grabbing a third after he robbed a defender, played a one two with Franklin and found the bottom corner.
Goalkeeper Holmes was unlucky to be beaten just before halftime to make it 3-1 but this showed the boys that the game wasn’t won and early in the second half the 3 goal lead was restored.
Thake’s long corner was taken down by Hoy who crossed for sub Bamford, making his debut, to score from close range.
OF grabbed a second before Parms finished the game on a high with 2 great goals.
Fifth goal was 4 passes from back to front, Holmes to Baldwin in the right back position, who pinged a cross field ball to left back Massingham who calmly controlled the ball on his chest and played it down the line to Thake who roasted his full back and got to the byline to fire a back post cross where Franklin was waiting to prod home.
The sixth goal was just as good Franklin put Etienne away down the right, it looked like the defender had boxed him in by the corner flag but Etienne coolly nut megged the poor fella and crossed to Franklin who fed man of the match Thake for his 2nd goal of the game.
