Day |
The usual uneven set of results with
good wins punctuated by heavy losses. The good stuff was the 1st team who made
no mistake in brushing aside Leyton County 6-0 as they were 5 divisions below
but you still have to beat them. So it was and this takes us to the quarter
finals for the first time since 1995, it could be even longer! With us and UCL
the only league sides remaining it will be a tough next round whatever happens
with some strong SAL sides in the draw. But for now the boys did a good job on a
day when the opponents had nothing to lose. The seconds battled out a 2-2 draw
against Globe Rangers who were a strong outfit. It turned out to be a fair
result but I think that we need to turn some of these draws into wins if we want
to make an impact at the top of the league. The good news is that we remain in
second spot. The 3rds had another of those days they would want to forget.
Taking the lead in their cup match they then gifted 2 goals to give the
initiative to the opposition and never recovered. It is a shame that after a
fine start to the season they have slid to 5 successive defeats and need to grab
a win from somewhere to boost morale. The 4ths have no such problems as they
demolished Egbertians 7-1 with Chris Bird grabbing a well deserved hattrick. It
should give them the confidence they need for this weeks quarter final against
Tenisonians. the 5ths arrived late and started with a 2-0 deficit after 10
minutes...need I say any more! They were then 3-1 down with 10 minutes to go
before coming through like a true thoroughbread to take the game 4-3 in the last
minute of this friendly. The 6ths and 7ths went on their travels to south London
and both came back empty handed with heavy defeats and nothing to show. Lets put
that down to experience and think about the next game!
Onto the Vets and again a mixed bag
with the A Vets taking the lead against Writtle who sit at the top before
succumbing to errors which handed the initiative back to Writtle who ran out
comfortable winners in the end. The B Vets continue to hold their own in third
palce with another good win away at Doddinghurst where Jamie Knight was the hero
as a defender with 2 goals and an MOM, it must be his lucky day. Finally the
over 45s made the long trip to Oakham for their group match against Rutland and
were unlucky to lose 1-0 after having a fair share of the play but with not many
opportunities to score. A similar journey awaits in 2 weeks time at Kirby Muxloe
which they need to win to stay in the senior competition.
A bit of information for the old farts
of the club. At a meeting last Thursday of the Essex Vets League I spoke to the
meeting regarding the setting uop of an over 45s league next year and
surprisingly there were 14 other clubs interested so it could be a likely
starter. If you want to be involved in playing over 45s rather than over 35s
then talk to your captain. If you are not a current player but are interested
then email me and let me know. We are looking for a minimum 18 players for the
squad and if it means we drop a side then we need to know now or if there are
sufficient numbers we can run 3 sides... its up to you.
There are a number of fines owed to
the club for bookings received, can the captains collect them and forward them
to me:
