I dont think I have seen a better set of
results especially for the first full day of the season in many years, it was
pleasing to see for all the teams particularly as the higher teams put in a lot of
work in preseason training and games and this is the result of that effort.
Starting at the top, the 1sts had a hard fought win at Aloysians coming back
twice to win the tie with a superb goal from Chris Akinrele 5 minutes from time.
A Scholsy penalty and one from Lewis Jones completed the scoring which means we
retain top spot in the premier division, something we havnt seen for a long
time. Jay Abberley and John Sargeant were the main stars in defence snuffing out
most of the Aloysian threats. Also congratulations to Chris Akinrele on his
selection for the league side that plays Bedford this week. The seconds had a
much tougher game than expected and went in 1-0 down at half time having failed
to convert
several good opportunities. On came Joe Mariani and a couple of chances are
created and
converted into goals for Dave Stevens who went on to complete his hattrick. It
was a good battling win which they will need to do quite often in order to get
results as there will be no easy games in this division. The 3rds were 3-1 up
and should have gone onto to win the game but took their foot off the gas and
allowed Queen Mary to come back into the game for a point. Iain Thomas got a
couple of goals and could have had some more, hopefully his goal tally will
increase as the season unfolds. The 4ths suddenly came alive in this match
and literally took Owens apart in this AFA cup tie. Chris Bird started the
season with 4 goals and scouse added a couple from his defensive bunker role. A
result that will get a lot of attention as Owens are one of the stronger SAL
sides and are not used to this sort of result. The 5ths continued their goal
fest with six this time but at 4-1 up at half time they should have made the
game quite safe but Camdenians pulled a couple back and it was backs to the wall
until a couple of late strikes from Adam Newman made the game safe. This completed a hattrick for him so well done Adam.
The 6ths had a difficult game on paper at Albanian
but their defensive prowess kept them at bay as they recorded a 2-0 win which is
their 4th clean sheet in a row. Paul Thomas' side are looking quite effective in
their results and hopefully this will serve them well in their quest for
honours. The 7ths also looked very strong against Woodhouseians with a good
balance of players in the side and a strong defensive unit. 2-0 up at half time
they took their chances at regular intervals to take them joint top of the
table. The A Vets had to battle away for a 1-0 win over Benfleet which given
their win last week against Writtle was a very good win and should give them
some much needed confidence. They created quite a few chances but couldnt
convert so they still are in need though of a couple of extra new
faces. The B Vets also battled for their win at Sanders with Simon Porter
netting the winner. The defence held firm with Terry Yeomans standing out as the
starman.
For those players who have yet to surface
if you want to get noticed or move up the sides then you need to get over to
training on a Thursday so now is the time.
- A warning to everyone. Last week
one of our players had a Sat Nav system stolen from his car in the Douglas
Eyre Car Park. Please make sure that anything of value is hidden from view.
This will avoid encouraging the thieves to comeback and try again.
- There are Referees courses and
child protection workshops available if anyone is interested. Please contact
Francis for details.
- Congratulations to Chris Akinrele
who has been selected by the League to play against Bedfordshire this week
in the National League Systems Cup.
- The League have signed up to
become a Respect League. This is an initiative launched by the FA to
increase sportsmanship and cut out gamesmanship, cheating and bad behaviour.
As a club we will be asking captains to get all players to sign up to this
by signing a team list, having read the terms of reference. These will be
posted on our website this week and handed out to each team member. Referees
will also be briefing both teams before the game on what he or she expects
during the game. so please support this scheme as it will make playing
football much more enjoyable for all concerned.
There are a number of fines owed to
the club for bookings received, can the captains collect them and forward them
to me:
Jon Redding £8, T.Rolt £5, B.Stevens £10, G.Bean £16, J.Sargeant £31
