The final Saturday for most teams ended with another league title for the
4ths but disappointment for the 5ths and relegation for the A Vets. The 4ths
went into the game with Beals needing a win to secure the Div 4 North title
whilst Beals only needed a draw or better to do the same so a high pressure game
if ever there was one. In the end the 4ths played a mature game not taking any
risks and allowing the speed of Chris Bird to do the damage which he duly did
with yet another hattrick but this time of greater significance. His final goal
was a cracker to finish off a season for the 4ths which ended with something to
show after the disappointment of the cup final defeat. Must mention Beals who
were very gracious in defeat especially as there was so much at stake in the
game. This is something I hope all our teams would be capable of in similar
circumstances. It has been 2 years unbeaten in the league for this side which is
a club record for any side and is something for Jeff Goy and his team to be
proud of. Also well done to Chris Bird on achieving a milestone 56 goals for the
season, a club record. Also a mention to Dave Stevens from the 2nds who finished
on a very creditable 47 for the season, and he is normally a midfield player!
Starting at the top of the tree, the first X1 ended the season with another
defeat, their 4th in 5 games which is a great shame given all they had done up
till the end of March. They finished 5th but proved to be the best team in the
division on a number of occasions without getting the results to back up that
assertion. Still 2 cups and given they were relegated last season it has not
been a bad year for them. Thanks to Casca Hoy for all the hard work that is
required for a first team and hopefully he will get more support from other
players to make it easier on the management side. The seconds also cruised home
in the end with 2 points from their last 2 games to ensure promotion in
second place. They too will be disappointed that they didnt have something to
show for all their efforts over 36 games in a gruelling end of season program.
Like the firsts they too will have high hopes of raising the bar and achieving
better things next season. Benno has done a great job with the team which has a
great team spirit and some very good players with more to come next season. The
3rds who were one of the early season strugglers rounded off a second half of
the season recovery with a thumping 4-0 win over Edmontonians to secure 2nd spot
and promotion by goal difference. Well done to Bayo and his team for
pulling things round and giving them something to celebrate this Friday.
The 5ths went into the game against Lea valley with anyone of 3 teams
including themselves could win the title or get promotion. Unfortunately they
couldnt quite pull it off as a number key decisions went against the team which
resulted in a defeat and 3rd place. In the end a victory would have guaranteed
promotion but not the league title as Ravenscroft had won convincingly. So
congratulations to Lea Valley our near rivals as title winners but also well
done to Colin Staines and his side for their achievements which includes a cup
win and the introduction of so many young players to the club and the fact that
the team always enjoys and looks forward to its football each week. The 6ths
signed off in style with a 6-1 win over Beals as they again found their goal
touch with Charlie Cohen grabbing 4 goals and Tom Bishop lashing a 25 yard
screamer into the top corner. Again a team of mainly young players who have also
enjoyed their football and developed as the season has progressed. Well done to
Paul Thomas and his partner Sue for holding it all together each week and
putting in the work that makes it well organised and enjoyable.
The 7ths rounded off the season in style with 3 wins in a week scoring 14
times and conceding none. It means the side achieves a 100% record in all games
which was last achieved in 1993 by Terry Groom and his team but they only won 3
trophies as opposed to the 4 by the 7ths. Records all over the place as Joe
Craddock scores his 20th goal of the season, a record for a centre half, Ashley
Leat kept 15 clean sheets which is also a club record and the 154 goals scored
by the team is also a club record too. So they wont have much to celebrate this
Friday! I think the team owe Norman Leat a great thank you for all his efforts
in organising the side (at some cost to him) to ensure the team always had
enough players on the day to ensure no slip ups and no complacency. Well done
Norman and now for some of those notorious jokes........The 8ths finished 4th in
their division despite beating the champions UCL twice. It was very much a hot
and cold affair through the season which meant that they couldnt get any
momentum going to mount a serious challenge for trophies. Thanks to Shaun Crowe
who had a busy time off the pitch which meant that he did a great job in the
circumstances holding it all together.
The 9ths and 10ths ended the season with good performances which means that
the more reliable players will get a chance to shine next season either in other
teams or in a 9th team in the league which I will apply for during the next few
weeks. Again another unsung hero was Devon Dyer who put in many hours at
training with the players and on the phone to get the sides out each week.
Someone should definitely buy him a drink on Friday! The A vets went over to
Benfleet with just 10 players as injuries, suspensions and absentees took their
toll. They were however 1-0 up with 15 minutes to go but couldnt hold out and so
are relegated to division1 next year. They have the consolation of the over 45s
cup and the semi final of the national cup this week as something to shout
about. Thanks to James Harrington and John Cowen for their efforts to make the
Vets football happen. Also Darren Braithwaite has held the B Vets together for
most of the season and they finished 3rd in the league which is a fine
achievement. New faces are needed to make sure that success continues. Also I
hope that some will turn up this Friday to show loyalty to the club which has
every other team represented.
Captains please ensure that I get back all the kit washed and dried which
means any shirts missing should be chased up. First Aid kits and footballs
should also be returned either at the meeting or soon after. You may also start
looking for sponsorship for next season if you want new shirts for your team.
Finally we desperately need to find a new host for this website as it
shuts down at the end of May. Let me know asap if you can help.
