Well we started the new
year with good news and some bad. The good news is the 1st team winning their
semi final 1-0 over Michendenians who aer flying high in the division below.
Tricky conditions with a semi frozen pitch it was difficult to keep your footing
but we seem to play it just right keeping it tight and still creating
opportunities. The winner came 10 minutes into the second half came when a
clearence from a cross by Scholsy came to Sean Dardis who took the ball on his
chest and volleyed over the keeper and defenders on the line to give the team a
cup final they richly deserved. Minch tried in vain to come back into the game
but with a well marshalled defence they were restricted to half chances and when
they did get strikes on goal, Paul Holland made a couple of top class saves.
Well done to the whole team where they will meet Bealonians in the final, it is
our 1st appearence in this final and the first cup final for the team since
2002. The 4ths found that they couldnt master the conditions against youthful
opponents. They battled away but mistakes cost them a semi final place in the
competition. They remain in one cup but league title ambitions will be their
main focus in 2009. The 7ths went to Norsemen in the AFA Cup in high hopes but
were eventually blown away but opponents that passed the ball on a frosty
surface and we just didnt keep possession long enough to make an impact.
Hopefully they can change their form this week in the Old Boys cup at Wilsons.
Onto the Vets and the cobwebs were blown away at Upminster as the A Vets went
2-0 down before coming back strongly to force a draw against a strong Upminster
side. A good workout as they now face Ford Basildon and Writtle in successive
weeks. The B Vets were still at the dinner table as they lost heavily at Trent
Park. Never in the game the team were " dreaming of a white Christmas" as they
went through the motions on a cold day and a hard pitch.
