It was a windy day all round which did
spoil some games but we seem to have come out on top in most games by playing
sensible football. The 1sts did just that by coming back from a goal down after
10 seconds! The equalised in a minute through Lewis Jones and went on to make it
3-1 by half time. Second half saw them and Parkfield have chances but none were
taken partly due to the team playing it tightly to take all 3 points and
maintain their great start to the season. They are now 4 points clear at the
top. The seconds went down to deepest Surrey for the second week in a row and
again came away with a convincing 5-1 win at Picturesque Boxhill. Well worth the
journey as Neil Coles helped himself to a hattrick in the process and this week
they can look forward to local fixture against promotion hopefuls Minchedenians.
The 3rds were 2-0 up with 6 minutes to go in their cup tie but couldnt hold out
and eventually lost 3-2 in extra time. It was a great effort against a Salvos
team 3 divisions higher. Still hope for better things to come. The 4ths had one
of those days when nothing would go right. An early penalty conceded and then
hit the post and 3 cleared off the line before they managed an equaliser right
at the end to secure a point. With 5 players missing through injury I suppose
the performance was understandable but not in keeping with their high standards.
The 5ths took a 2-0 lead against top of the table Mill Hill and easily held on
for victory which could have been even more. They dominated the game and looked
like the team of 2 weeks ago that scored six against Camdenians. They will be
playing that team again this week in the cup! The 6ths had to work hard for
their win at Ignatians in a see saw game which saw the lead change hands several
times before a late goal won it for us. The win keeps them just behind the
leaders in the division. The 7ths had a repaet performance of the previous week.
A goal behind after 15 minutes against the run of play they battled back against
10 man Edmontonians to take a 3-1 lead. Again a lapse saw the visitors get it
back to 3-2 before we saw out the game to maintain the 100% start and top
position. The 8ths had to battle back from being behind and then going 2-1
ahaead before Mayfield pegged them back again. This time they managed two late
goals to get the three points against the leaders and keep themselves in 3rd
spot. The 9ths went on the rampage against a weak Leyton Green side but also
managed to play good football in the bargain as they clocked up 10 goals. Miguel
Asuncao and Damien Chester managed hattricks and there were a few other players
who caught the eye. In all a good days work and maybe a stronger test is
required soon.
Onto the Vets and the A team managed a
good first half against Runwell before a slack period allowed the visitors to
win the game without us putting in too much pressure on their goal. Where is
that striker!! The B Vets had a better day coming back from 1-0 down and then
going 2-1 up before they equalised near the end of the game. In to extra time
and we seemed to be the fitter of the sides and 2 further goals sealed a well
deserved win in the league cup. A much tougher task awaits this week in the
shape of Debden in the VFA Cup.
On the subject of Vets we will have six
players on International duty this week as England Over 50s and Over 55s take on
Wales in Merthyr Tydfil this Saturday. John Cowen, John Day, Glen Swaby, Paul
Barritt, Keith Sharp and Bruce Smith will all be taking part so we all wish them
well and lets hope they can bring back some glory, just like the seniors!
For those players who have yet to surface
if you want to get noticed or move up the sides then you need to get over to
training on a Thursday so now is the time.
- The League have signed up to
become a Respect League. This is an initiative launched by the FA to
increase sportsmanship and cut out gamesmanship, cheating and bad behaviour.
As a club we will be asking captains to get all players to sign up to this
by signing a team list, having read the terms of reference. These will be
posted on our website this week and handed out to each team member. Referees
will also be briefing both teams before the game on what he or she expects
during the game. so please support this scheme as it will make playing
football much more enjoyable for all concerned.
