After our winter break we finally got
back to playing football. For some players it was 6 weeks since they last played
and some of them were a little rusty. However we have now reached the business
end of the season and the games are now getting much tougher. None more so was
the 1st teams visit to AFA cup holders Nottsborough. Far from being underdogs we
dominated most of the game and had several gilt edged chances to take the lead
before they scored from a corner. It was a cruel blow for the team that more
than matched their opponents for on another day we could easily come away with a
fine win. The whole team can be proud of their performance but now they must
focus on winning this week in a semi final of the Old Boys cup for which we are
the holders. The seconds faced a Beals side that is top of the division above
and on paper looked a tough task. However as it turned we dominated the game
from start to finish restricting them to only one chance with Dave stevens twice
and Sam Bird applying the finishing touches to easily see off Beals and book a
cup final spot in this competition for the first time against Minchendenians.
Well done to the whole team on a superb effort. Hopefully they can repeat that
this week against Nottsborough. The thirds bounced back in style after some
indifferent performance before christmas. The additions of some new faces helped
make the team more solid and this showed all too clearly against Enfield. Bayo's
report"
Kos couvee lobbed keeper after 10mins with a clinical through ball from
midfield. Damian delisser ran them ragged all game scored with another good move
that saw him lob the keeper again. After 30 mins they got a goal back. 2nd half
saw Mark Jones come on. He scored with his 2nd touch of the game. By rounding
keeper following good possession. A headed 2nd goal by Jones followed ten min
later. Pountain-holes scored the 5th goal with 30 yard dipping volley to round
things off." Not bad then! Onto the 4th team who suffered their 1st defeat of
the season in the AFA Cup. A long journey to East Molesey saw them arrive with 2
players light. As a result younger players were thrown in for a full 90 minutes
and at half time 1-1 was a good return for their efforts. Unfortunately we
conceded 2 goals in the 1st 5 minutes of the second half and fell away as we
chased the game. A great shame as the opportunity was there to go all the way in
this competition. The 5ths had most of their game against Finchleians but missed
early opportunities to take a commanding lead. In the end they pushed hard in
the second half and with 2 goals from Mike Morgan and another from Dave Perkins
it was enough to reach the semi finals of this cup. On a sadder note Chris
Staines would like to thank all his team mates for their support after his best
mate died in a car crash on Friday night.
The 6th team roared
back into action despite missing several players. They outplayed Queen Mary in
this Drummond cup match and took a 4-1 lead before they eased off and allowed
Queen Mary a couple of late goals. Tim Simms was the goal hero scoring a
haatrick and Richard Coulson scoring the other. They will meet the 7th team in
the quarter finals after they thumped Leyton County 7-2. 5-0 up they allowed
Leyton a couple of goals back before adding a further 2 more to make the
scoreline reflect the possesion. No hattricks but a couple each for Dale Anglin
and Jeff Williams- Baah. The 8ths didnt really play well after the 6 week break
and struggled to get into any rythmn in their game but luckily they were playing
the bottom side and managed to come away with a respectable 4-1 win. Jack Jobber
managed a couple more to add to his total for the season. The 9ths had much the
better of the game against Egbertians who are several divisions up the league
but lost out by the odd goal in seven. Hassan Erdogan claimed a hattrick, his
first for the club but it was a very encouraging display against a team from
division 5 and with over 20 players to choose from, competition even at the
lower end of the club is intense.
The Over 45s marched
on in the super vets cup with a narrow win over Deaconsfield to reach the semi
finals of the cup for the 1st time. It wasnt easy but with Phil Stanton coming
down all the way from Peterborough, he was rewarded with his 50th and 51st goals
for the club so he tells me. ( I dont know many players who keep records!)
Anyway it was a good performance with several players missing from the team. The
semi final Im sure will be much tougher but at least there is some chance of
glory this season. And finally the B Vets still have a chance of glory too as
they were held by Grays to a draw who are still favouites to win the title. 1-0
down the team came back to equalise from the penalty spot from Arnie Howell and
then take the lead from Tim Wright. Paul Barritt managed to out sprint one of
his opponents to clear off the line, not bad for a 60 year old! Unfortunately
they couldnt hold out and 10 minutes from time Grays equalised. A good solid
performance nevertheless and they are still in the hunt for that
title/promotion.
Team performances and goalscorers

weekly basis
- We have a number of young players aged
between 16 and 18 who are looking for employment either as trainees or
apprentices. If you have your own business or know through your job of
vacancies then please let me know.
- The Amateur Football Combination
are now recognised as a Respect League. This is an initiative launched by the FA to
increase sportsmanship and cut out gamesmanship, cheating and bad behaviour.
As a club we will be asking captains to get all players to sign up to this
by signing a team list, having read the terms of reference. These will be
posted on our website this week and handed out to each team member. Referees
will also be briefing both teams before the game on what he or she expects
during the game. So please support this scheme as it will make playing
football much more enjoyable for all concerned.
There are a number of fines owed to
the club for bookings received, can the captains collect them and forward them
to me:
