The 1st team started their league
campaign in style with a comfortable 3-0 win at newly promoted Clapham. Jay
Abberley got the scoring going midway through the first half and a rare goal
from Rob Cooper plus one from Dan Jordan secured an easy win. Further chances
were available but not taken. The seconds figured in a replay of last seasons
game at Globe Rangers going a goal down before taking the lead only to be pegged
back near the end. It was a very competitive game given the positions of
the teams last year so it will be interesting how things pan out over the season
as both teams are expected to do well, especially us after an excellent pre
season. More players back this week will also boost the team strength. The
thirds continued to find goalscoring a problem which meant that the high amount
of possession failed to result in a well deserved win, this against a side 2
divisions above them. Hopefully that goalscorer will materialise and the season
will begin to take off. They did lose to a 25 yard volley which did deserve to
win any game.
The 4ths had another draw this time
against Birkbeck College which was illuminated by a 40 yard screamer from Dan
Smith which flew into the net. Hopefully they can step up the pace this week as
they have a very tricky AFA Cup tie against Old Owens. The 5ths finally found
their form with an emphatic win over Beals which gives them the confidence they
were looking for. The 6ths didnt need any more confidence but they too
comfortably beat Beals 5-0 to record a total of 25 goals and none conceded in
pre season games. Another good team performance with Ricky Thomas and David
Britton picking up a couple goals each. The 7ths had a tricky fixture against
Oakhill Tigers and came out on top with a good defensive display coupled with a
striker who has an eye for goal. Its a good recipe for success. The 8ths managed
to complete the whitewash of Beals with a 7-0 thrashing as Michael Butterworth
returned to score 5 and Manager Shaun Crowe who gets married next week managed
to score too, (obviously getting practice for the wedding night!). Best wishes
Shaun for the big day.
Onto the Vets where the A team were
hoping for a good start but again they were let down by 2 players and another
who managed to get himself sent off. Not good for the club or team so we now
need to find some new players who want to play for the club and support it
through tough as well as good times, fairweather players are not needed. The B
Vets had enough chances to win this game but had to settle for a late penalty to
get a draw from the game against newcomers Hale End. Missing James Knight and
Arnie Howell probably made the difference and they will need them on a regular
basis if they are to challenge for promotion.
For those players who have yet to surface
if you want to get noticed or move up the sides then you need to get over to
training on a Thursday so now is the time.
- Rule changes for this season mean
that subs will now be collected before the game as we have to pay refs
beforehand and also it avoids players who leave in a hurry forgetting to pay
their subs!
- FOR THIS SEASON, we will be
looking for players to join the club who are RELIABLE above all else. So whovever
you bring to the club make sure they know what it costs and what is expected
of them as a club member.
- WE also need at least one
goalkeeper who is of a standard to play at least 3rd team level, if
you know of someone who fits the bill, let me know.
There are a number of fines owed to
the club for bookings received, can the captains collect them and forward them
to me:
Jon Redding £8, T.Rolt £5, B.Stevens £10, M.ODonoghue £8, G.Bean £16, E.Corten £16, J.Sargeant £23
