The 1st team suffered a major blow in
their effort to stay up when they lost heavily to Meadonians who were also
struggling. On the face of it it looks like a heavy defeat but in essence we
were dominant in the first half without scoring and after they took the lead
came back to equalise with 15 minutes to go. Instead on keeping it tight and
holding onto what we had we let them score 3 times in 5 minutes from breakaways
which was not too clever in the circumstances. It means that we are now in a
relegation scrap for the last 7 games, hoping that we can turn the corner very
quickly. This weeks final will be a chance to regain some pride and it will be
down to players to show that they have the determination to turn things around.
You dont become a bad side overnight so its down to the team to put things
right. I wish them well for the final. The second team lost out at lowly Mill
Hill County after the good result of the previous week. It was a great shame as
it follows a pattern of inconsistency over recent weeks which may undo all the
work that has gone into reaching the top spot in the division. Promotion is now
looking less likely unless the chasing teams start to slip up. The 3rds staged a
revival of sorts when they had much the better of the game against Buckwellians
to earn a draw. Scott Moore was the man of the match scoring twice and giving
their defenders a difficult time. Having a goalscorer makes a difference to any
team and he might be able to lift the side out of the doldrums. The 4ths gave
themselves an enormous lift in their title campaign by beating their closest
challengers Buckwellians with a composed display to leave themselves with a 7
point margin advantage. They also remain undefeated in their league campaign.
The 5ths continued their good work of the previous week with a convincing win
over Woodhouseians. They were made to work for the goals but they came and it
gave them a vital 3 points which should stave off relegation. The 6ths went back
to that favouraite scorline of theirs, 4-0 as they lost out to leaders Leyton
County. It has now left them in mid table with all hopes of promotion now gone
which is a shame after the work that went in to the first half of the season.
The 7ths ended up short in their visit to Alexandra Park and so struggled even
with the players that they borrowed. It is a shame that Devon is consistently
being let down by players who just dont show up without any warning. It ruins
the game for those that do turn up and may put the future of the team in doubt.
What they do need is an influx of reliable players to stabilise the side.
The Vets sides all won for a change in
differing circumstances. The A vets had a scrappy game with Ford Basildon and it
was imperative that they won as relegation is a possibility. With only a bare 11
they managed to nick the points as Fords too were struggling for players.
Interestingly enough they now lie in 4th spot but any of 7 teams could still go
down so there is still plenty to play for. The B Vets had a comfortable win to
finish their league campaign in possibly 3rd place a good result from a season
where they were always missing key players. Jon Walsh scored another 2 goals to
push his tally past 20 for the season. Finally the over 45s won their final
group game at Dulwich 3-1 to march into the quarter finals of the Umbro National
Cup. Paul Mitchell scored early on and then Arnie Howell Made it 2-0 before half
time. Instead of taking over and scoring more Dulwich came back into the game
with a goal that unsettled the side. The game was finally made safe 3 minutes
from time when Arnie Howell went through and beat the keeper from close range.
The next round is scheduled for 5th April at either Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil or
Barnstaple.. so pack your bucket and spade and away we go!
