Well for those of you that didnt go you
missed an excellent club supper held in darkness for the last 2 hours due to a
major power failure in the area. We just managed to complete the meal before
darkness fell and Brian Robinson and Paul Mitchell produced 2 fine speeches
under the emergency lighting which eventually ran out of juice around 11.00pm.
It was atmospheric to say the least and the first time in its history a club
dinner was held in semi darkness.
Elsewhere the B Vets finally ended their
season with a well earned draw at Tansley. John Salloway guested for us to
ensure we had a solid looking defence. Now the team must look to recruit new
members if it is to mount any challenge next season. Also last Saturday the
Harry Hosier memorial Trophy match was held at Waltham Abbey FC and this time
the Old Parmiterians won 5-2, their first win in 4 years. It must be said though
that many of the Barry Hosier select team were into their forties and their age
is now starting to show. There are some team photos from that game on the
website in the OPFC photo gallery page.
Other news is that Paul Thomas will be
returning to the club next season to run one of the teams and will be bringing
in some more young talent. As I said last week Dean Drummond is off to the
States in July and so ends a relationship that goes back to around 1981 when he
joined us as a 16 year old. A club stalwart that will be sorely missed. We do
need more players like him, its what makes this a club.
- International recognition for
some of our over 45s on June 20th. An England Vets teams of over 50s and
over 55s will take on Wales in games at Bisham Abbey. We are nominating the
following players for the squads: Over 50s John Cowen, Glen Swaby, Ken
Ballard and John Day; Over 55s: Keith Sharp, Danny O'Brien, Paul Barritt and
Bruce Smith. It is unbelievable that at this time of life something like
this comes along. It gives incentive to everyone to carry on playing.
-
Managers/Captains I will need all
kit (cleaned), footballs (cleaned) and first aid returned to me asap after the last game.
Players will you make sure you return to your team or me any shirts you may
have in your kit bag or at home. It will save the club a lot of money
unnecessarily replacing missing shirts.
- FOR NEXT SEASON, we will be
looking for players to join the club who are RELIABLE above all else. We
still have some players who let us down and we dont need any more so whovever
you bring to the club make sure they know what it costs and what is expected
of them as a club member.
- Advance notice that the AGM will
be held on Wednesday 24 June. Details to follow in the post.
- There will be pre season Training
at Douglas Eyre starting on Tuesday 4 August. Further details will follow.
- I am looking for shirt sponsors
for next season at around £400 per set. If you can get someone to help in
this way contact me now. We need new shirts and this way we can get them for
more teams.
There are a number of fines owed to
the club for bookings received, can the captains collect them and forward them
to me or the players send me a cheque payable to OPFC. I would like to start
next season with a clean sheet.
